This will allow you to explore the blind prophet more easily. Consider adding a character who can see the future and is clearly not blind. Having another blind character who can’t see the future also helps. She should not be able to see more clearly when seeing the future than she can in daily life. Her visions should reflect her level of vision, as I’m sure you’ll be sure to show in your story. Seeing things that won’t happen is a fun twist. I suggest continuing to research her blindness, but it seems like this a good start.

Giving her some vision helps with the trope, as she won’t be gaining something to replace sight. It sounds like these are significant changes. Blind Prophet Reworkįor reference, the asker is referring to this post.

Particularly, I'm trying to figure out how to get her to a blind community at some point, though it's not easy because so far she doesn't like to travel places.Īre these significant enough changes to help combat this old trope, or should I scrap her blindness altogether (though I'd leave it with the other character?) The reason I want to keep it this badly is because all three of my protagonists, of which she is one, are disabled, and I as a disabled but seeing person wanted to show how the wide variety of disabilities overlaps but aren't equivocal. She's fully independent and runs her own apothecary in the story, and as per your suggestions I've made another (more minor, but still significant) character blind as well, and absolutely am open to adding more. Her gift of prophecy, on the other hand, is a very recent development, like it started the past three years, and she's in her twenties. I was thinking of going specifically with trouble seeing things clearly if they're any farther than a room's width away, but I still need to do some research. And rather than going temporarily blind, she's had impaired vision from birth or a very young age. She's still a prophet, but much less powerful-specifically, she only 'sees' things that won't happen, and usually has to figure out how this seemingly inevitable thing is going to not happen. Originally she was a seer who went temporarily blind after her visions, but after scrolling your blog and seeing your complaints about blind seers, I've changed her some.

Hi! I wanted to get your opinion on a character I'm trying to finalize for a fantasy series of mine. This post has been cross-posted onto WordPress. Otherwise, it is pretty much the same as any other time someone goes on a trip with friends. Consider if the character wants to bring anything like glasses or assistive devices for if their vision gets worse at night. I suppose it would help if a friend knows sighted guide and the visually impaired character can navigate without depth perception. I don’t know that I have much to say on a visually impaired person going on a trip with friends. Additionally, I don’t find many blind parents in media. The trope is also subverted by having an almost totally blind parent instead. Having such a character, who we’ll call visually impaired for ease, would certainly change things. The child may not even be considered blind, depending on how blindness is measured in that world, as blindness is defined going by the best eye with best correction. What you have outlined seems great for avoiding the trope completely. For stories, they are a nice alternative to sunglasses. Hats for light sensitivity are brilliant. (Because this is an ancient sunny desert community, I was considering hats for light sensitivity and a braille-like writing system - the fic character is an herbalist.)ĭo you have any thoughts on what should especially considered when the child leaves their parent to travel with good friends, when both parent and child are visually impaired in this way?Īvoiding Blind-Seer Trope and Traveling With Friends

I was thinking of changing the child character to having one eye with full sight, the other eye almost none, and having their parent have near total blindness in both eyes. Hello, thank you for running this blog, I love reading what you have to say!įor my fic, one of the pieces of source material has a child “blind-future seer,” and I don’t want to perpetuate that trope.
